LGBTQIA+ DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM : TEACHING CULTURE
This workshop is a practical and reflective discussion on three educators’ experiences integrating LGBTQIA+ issues in the classroom and navigating numerous challenges. It provides strategies and resources for other educators who are interested in creating a more diverse and inclusive space, whilst adding to the ongoing discussion on the importance of these issues in education. Martha Nussbaum’s Central Human Capabilities highlights the importance of Affiliation. This can be summarised as being able to live with, recognise and have empathy for others, in addition to treating and being treated with self-respect, dignity and fairness without discrimination “on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, caste, religion, national origin and species” (Nussbaum, 2007:4). Diversity and inclusion are essential for everyone to feel a sense of belonging, to feel safe, respected and heard. During Pride Month events, workshops and special-themed classes are often held, however, outside of Pride Month LGBTQIA+ issues may often be absent. Fostering an LGBTQIA+ inclusive environment does not demand expertise but instead awareness and a willingness to educate oneself. As educators who wish to create learning environments which are both safe and nurturing for all, consideration must be given to the impact of overlooking LGBTQIA+ issues.
Michelle Lees is an educator deeply committed to fostering equity, currently a full-time lecturer at Kanda University of International Studies. Their passion lies in creating inclusive learning environments and conducting research on social justice in language education, gender equality in sports, LGBTQIA+ policy, and equitable Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
Andria Lorentzen is a lecturer in the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies, Japan. Her research interests include Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), EFL media literacy, the use of artificial intelligence in language education, and makerspaces for language learners. She co-leads a learning community on LGBTQIA+ issues.
Sammy Woldeab is an educator from Canada who is currently based in Japan. They are a lecturer at the English Language Institute at Kanda University of International Studies. Their research interests include language teacher/learner identity.
