INSTRUCTING EFL LEARNERS TO DESIGN A TRAVEL BROCHURE IN THE COURSE ‘ENGLISH FOR TOURISM’ : ELT INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY

As for teaching ESP, in addition to linguistic skills and vocabulary acquisition, it is of great importance that practical tasks be integrated into the course contents. The purpose is to help students get exposed to authentic materials and prepare them for certain real-life tasks in their future career. Concerning the course “English for Tourism”, writing promotional content with proper illustration is one of the necessary skills and it could be a cutting-edge skill for fresh graduates. Therefore, I have attempted to incorporate designing a travel brochure into the assessment scheme in the last two years and accumulated certain experience in instructing EFL learners to accomplish the task. In my presentation, I would like to share my preparations prior to the course; my step-by-step instructions for students; and most importantly my personal reflections on how to conduct the task effectively and what common mistakes students may make. Plus, I would like to share some of my students' typical travel brochure samples for other fellow teachers' reference. Hopefully, through my sharing, I could deliver some recommendations for teaching ESP, especially, in the field of tourism.
