“WE DON’T WANT TO LEARN ENGLISH SPEAKING FROM A THAI INSTRUCTOR!”: COPING WITH STUDENTS WITH BIAS AGAINST THAI-ENGLISH ACCENT : ELT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Many research studies on learners' attitudes towards native and non-native English instructors have underscored the ideology of native-speakerism globally, Thailand included. Results from the pilot study of this research on students' preference between native English and Thai instructors supports those previous studies, with additional findings that Thai students exhibit the slightest preference for Thai instructors in listening-speaking classes. Through questionnaires and focus group sessions, this research delves deeper into classroom management strategies employed by Thai English instructors and students' perspectives to optimize learning outcomes, especially when engagement with a Thai instructor for English listening-speaking sessions is inevitable. Notably, the study demonstrates that, despite initial reservations, students can enhance their listening-speaking proficiencies under the tutelage of Thai instructors.
