“COLLABORATIVELY ADDRESSING THE CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT NEEDS OF INTERNATIONAL TESOL LECTURERS AT A TRANSNATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTE IN CHINA” : ELT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Transnational Higher Education (TNHE) is a rapidly developing sector within international education which requires further research and development, particularly in relation to the domain of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). This presentation will engage in a comprehensive exploration of the experiences of ITLs (International TESOL Lecturers) in TNHE within the context of China, which is a key market for TNHE. The specific areas that the research will explore are Continuing Professional Development (CPD), Communities of Practice (CoP), and cultural dimensions, within the context of ITLs’ experiences in TNHE. The study will be highly relevant to TESOL professionals in Asia due to the multifaceted issues that they may face pertaining to CPD when teaching in an international context which may relate to areas such as pedagogy and culture. Therefore, this presentation will offer not only greater understandings of pedagogical and cultural practices that relate to ITLs, but will also provide insights into TNHEIs (Transnational Higher Education Institutions) and policymakers in the fields of TNHE and TESOL through the dissemenation of empirical data pertaining to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in these contexts. This presentation will be based on ongoing Doctoral research at a TNHEI in China.
Philip James Allardice has over a decade of experience in the field of TESOL within Thailand and China.
