ASSESSMENT THE IMPACT OF CEFR-BASED LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION: A CASE STUDY OF LEARNER LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY : TEACHING YOUNG LEARNERS

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) has gained prominence as a comprehensive framework for language education worldwide. This case study investigates the influence of CEFR-based language instruction on language proficiency and learner motivation. A diverse group of language learners participated in CEFR-based instruction, which included pre- and post-assessments, motivation surveys, and qualitative interviews. Quantitative analysis of language proficiency data revealed a statistically significant improvement in participants' language skills following CEFR-based instruction. Notably, learners demonstrated significant progress in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Motivation surveys indicated that learners' motivation levels increased throughout the instruction period. Qualitative data from interviews and focus groups collaborated this finding, highlighting the positive impact of CEFR-based instruction on learners' engagement and enthusiasm. Challenges faced by learners and instructors were identified, including the need for tailored materials and targeted support. However, the benefits of aligning instruction with CEFR descriptors, such as clear learning objectives and enhanced learner autonomy, rather impact these challenges. This study reveals the effectiveness of CEFR-based language instruction in improving language proficiency and motivating learners. It emphasizes the importance of aligning curriculum and assessment with CEFR levels and descriptors for optimal outcomes in language education.
