USING GENERATIVE AI (CHATGPT) TO GENERATE WRITTEN FEEDBACK : ELT INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Students benefit from receiving feedback that is meaningful, manageable, constant, and timely (Hartshorn et al., 2010). Yet, providing such written feedback can be quite taxing for teachers. The introduction of new generative artificial intelligence technology, such as large language models, may offer teachers a novel way to generate feedback that is meaningful, manageable, constant, and timely. In this interactive workshop, attendees will learn one way to utilize ChatGPT to provide constructive and personalized feedback on students’ writing. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop and an example writing assignment from their own teaching context. Participants will develop AI prompt skills and a workflow that generates written feedback tailored to the requirements and expectations of the specific assignment. Presenters and attendees will share best practices in prompt engineering and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of leveraging generative AI for generating written feedback for English language learners.
