ENHANCING MEDICAL VOCABULARY FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AT THAIBINH UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACY : LANGUAGE LEARNING

English medical vocabulary competence has played an important role for those in the field of medicine. However, the first-year students in each class size of 35 at Thaibinh University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam do not have enough medical terms, they need equipping an amount of necessary medical vocabulary. This study will deal with some teaching techniques of medical words to enhance medical vocabulary for the first-year students. The diverse designed strategies of teaching English medical lexicon such as games, songs, pictures, real objectives, word parts, contexts, exercises flashcards and producing vocabulary were applied to educate students to learn medical topics effectively. The questionnaire, interview, and observation were employed as the data collection instruments. Findings showed that the applied approaches did facilitate students with their medical terminology ability including with long term memory, self-confidence, medical workshops, conferences and self -study. Further investigation involving medical vocabulary acquisition for the second-year students is suggested.

I have been working as a lecturer of English for 19 years in the Foreign Language Department at Thaibinh University of Medicine and Pharmacy and Sonla College. I received my Master degree in 2009 from Darlana University, Sweden and my PhD degree in 2018 from Cagayan State University, the Philippines. I published articles in English language teaching.

I received a MA in English Laguna State Polytechnic University in 2009, a Doctor of Philosophy in Education_Major in English Language Education, Cagayan State University in 2018. I have 23 years' experience in teaching English to minorities students at High School.
