SPOKEN ENGLISH OF CHINESE ETHNIC MINORITY STUDENTS— ANY EFFECTS OF THEIR L2 PROFICIENCY ON ENGLISH (L3) SPEAKING FLUENCY? : SPEAKING / PRONUNCIATION

One part of my research in the field of English speaking of ethnic minority learners will be illustrated in this paper. Based on Yuan&Ellis (2003), learners’ acquisition and learning experience of L1 (their native languages)&L2 (Chinese) speaking may have effect on the developing of L3(English in this study) in terms of the speaking fluency. In this paper, relevant literature reviews on the relationship between L1&L2&L3 will be mentioned. In addition, a hypothesis will be proposed, that is, ‘ethnic minority learners learning experience and proficiency of L2 will effect on their oral English (L3) performance compared with Han Chinese learner, especially in terms of speaking fluency (hesitations, repairs or pauses). A experimental study within 4 junior university minority students are launched at Honghe university in Yunnan province, China. And then, the fluency of their English speaking will be analyzed to examine if there are any relations between L2 fluency and L3 (English) fluency based on their different levels and learning experience of L2.
